At Roscommon Community College we strive to continuously create and maintain, within the school a protective caring atmosphere in which each student can develop to his/her full potential. As education is about the whole person for life, we are concerned not only with academic success but also with the social, physical and moral development of the individual. The College has developed an exchange programme with a sister school in Tucson Arizona, and a joint application has been made for a technology hardware grant which will allow the two schools to communicate directly with each other through video conferencing equipment. The College has excellent facilities which include a top class football pitch and an asphalt basketball / tennis court. There are three well equipped practical areas and all classrooms have broadband internet access points. The College also has a 20 acre farm with livestock.
The College has recently engaged in a counselling programme, which aims to facilitate the emotional needs of the students. Two foreign-language tutors have been engaged to work with a number of international students who have recently enrolled in the College. The College has a proactive role within its community and works closely with the residents’ association to upgrade facilities around its immediate environs. It has also linked in with the local community garden programme where it shares its facilities.
The College has a Five Year Plan, which examines a broad range of strategies designed to enhance the learning experience of the students. It also focuses on school facilities and how they need to develop in the light of the expanding population of the College. This plan can be accessed by contacting the College directly.
The College has a progressive philosophy of education and puts the students at the centre of its learning values. Its approach is holistic with equal emphasis put on developing the student educationally, emotionally and socially.
Our students are encouraged to be outgoing, respectful, caring and concerned with the needs of others. This sense of responsibility is reflected on the school’s code of conduct. We encourage students to participate in extra curricular activities including student exchanges, scholarships to the Gaeltacht and Euro Language College each year, the school trips to Delphi and other educational outings help foster a sense of responsibility while building confidence in the students.
