What is Music Generation

Music Generation, Ireland’s National Music Education Programme that transforms the lives of children and young people through access to high quality performance music education.


It is co-funded by U2, The Ireland Funds, the Department of Education and Skills and Local Music Education Partnerships.


Music Generation Galway County came on board in June 2018, followed by Music Generation Galway City in January 2019 with Music Generation Roscommon due to start in Spring 2019.

Music Generation Galway County Programmes

Symphonic Waves

Symphonic Waves is a youth orchestra for the west of Ireland open to young musicians aged 13 – 21 from or based in Galway, Roscommon, Sligo, Leitrim, Mayo, Clare or Limerick. The orchestra was formed in 2017 as a project for Galway 2020, European Capital of Culture. Symphonic Waves’ programme is now managed and delivered by Music Generation Galway County and Music Generation Galway City.

Symphonic Waves started as a string orchestra in 2017 and is currently expanding to become a symphony orchestra by 2020 to include all sections – Strings, Brass, Wind and Percussion.


Symphonic Waves is supported by Galway 2020 European Capital of Culture and Galway County Council.

Uilleann Pipes Programme

Music Generation Galway County’s Uilleann Pipes tuition programme in partnership with Na Píobairí Uilleann has launched in two locations in Connemara – An Cheathrú Rua (Carraroe) and Corr Na Móna – and Clifden with expansion planned into the future subject to demand.

Lán le Ceol:

Lán le Ceol is a brand new performance music education programme being offered to Junior Infants – 6th Class delivered by Music Generation Galway County. Suitably experienced musicians will be placed in schools in a phased roll-out beginning in early 2019.
Lán le Ceol is a child-centred performance music education approach which engages children in active music-making through singing activities and games, rhythm, solfége and improvisation encouraging independent music making from an early age. A musician who specializes in whole class tuition will spend 30 minutes with each class/group during the school day on a weekly basis.

RockPopHipHop:

RockPopHipHop is a popular music access programme for teenagers providing tuition in a range of instruments and vocals as well as ensemble playing. The programme will also create opportunities for participants to meet like-minded musicians and form bands. Launched in Tuam and Gort in January 2019 RockPopHipHop will continue to expand to new locations over the coming years.
