Is mór an chúis áthais do GRETB gur thug an Coimisiún Eorpach aitheantas faoi leith dó i rith an tseachtain Eorpach um Scileanna Gairme ón 20 go dtí 24 Samhain 2017 sa chatagóir ‘Soláthróir Nuálaíoch Gairmoideachais agus Gairmoiliúna’ as an obair atá déanta aige chun litearthacht agus uimhearthacht a fhí isteach le printíseachtaí. Dúradh an méid seo a leanas sa dámhachtain:

Measann an giúiré gur dea-chleachtas an modh éifeachtach a úsáideadh chun cumais litearthachta agus matamaitice a fheabhsú. Nuair a réitítear fadhbanna le scileanna litearthachta agus teanga a luaithe agus is féidir, cothaítear rannpháirtíocht sna gníomhaíochtaí scolaíochta eile atá riachtanach chun go mbeadh an duine infhostaithe ar bhonn leanúnach.

Is é atá i gceist leis an tacaíocht seo ná measúnuithe matamaitice saincheaptha, ranganna tacaíochta matamaitice, Scileanna Staidéir trí úsáid a bhaint as Lámhleabhar Staidéir agus Foghlama do Phrintísigh, chomh maith le cabhair staidéir indibhidiúil le léitheoireacht, tuiscint agus teanga de réir mar a theastaíonn sí. Tá Foghlaim le Cuidiú Teicneolaíochta (TEL) á húsáid sa chlár freisin agus tá ábhair agus acmhanní nua a chabhróidh leis an litearthacht á bhforbairt freisin. Tá leabhar dar teideal ‘Ideas for Integrating Literacy’ do theagascóirí sna ceirdeanna curtha i dtoll a chéile freisin, a bhfuil rannán ann faoi TEL agus Disléicse.

Agus an clár seo curtha chun feidhme, tá pasanna le tuillteanas ardaithe faoi 47% agus tá atreoruithe i scrúduithe teoirice laghdaithe go 0%. Fágann sé sin ar fad go bhfuil printísigh in ann tabhairt faoin gceird atá roghnaithe acu le níos mó muiníne agus scile, agus go bhfuil na scileanna acu staidéar ag leibhéal níos airde nuair a thugann siad faoi na céimeanna níos deireanaí a reáchtáiltear sna hInstitiúidí Teicneolaíochta.

Chuir Rannóg Breisoideachais agus Oiliúna GRETB Straitéis Litearthachta agus Uimhearthachta i dtoll a chéile in 2015, ar tionscnamh é a bhí ag teacht le haidhmeanna agus cuspóirí na Straitéise Náisiúnta Litearthachta agus Uimhearthachta. Leag an Stiúrthóir Breisoideachais agus Oideachais, Eithne Nic Dhonnchadha, béim ar a thábhachtaí is atá sé cinntiú go bhfuil gach clár dírithe ar an bhfoghlaimeoir agus bhí ardmholadh aici do Alison Jones, an tEagraí Litearthachta d’Aosaigh, a rinne comhordú agus dearadh ar shonraí an churaclaim i gcomhpháirt le teagascóirí ó ionad oiliúna Bhord Oideachais agus Oiliúna na Gaillimhe agus Ros Comáin i Mervue. Cruthaíodh an t-ábhar múinteoireachta ar fad chun tacú le teagasc sna cláir phrintíseachta i dteicneolaíocht mótair, oibriú miotail, cearpantóireacht agus siúinéireacht agus leictreach. Cruthaíodh ábhar tacaíochta breise chun tacú leis an bPrintíseacht nua Commis Chef.

GRETB are delighted to receive a special mention by the European Commission as part of 2017 European Vocational Skills week 20th to the 24th November 2017 in the category of ‘Innovative VET provider’ for the work done to Integrate literacy and numeracy within apprenticeships. The award stated that:

The jury considers the effective method of improving literacy and Math capabilities in apprenticeships a good practice. Remedying numeracy and language skills as soon as possible will foster participation in future schooling activities that are necessary for continued employability.

The support takes the form of tailored Maths assessments, Maths support classes, Study Skills using a dedicated Study and Learning Handbook for Apprentices, as well as individual study help in reading, comprehension and language as needed. Technology Enhanced Learning is also being used in the programme and new literacy friendly materials and resources developed. An ‘Ideas for Integrating Literacy’ book for craft instructors and tutors has also been produced which includes a section on TEL and Dyslexia.

With the programme in place, we have seen merits rise by 47% and theory exam referrals drop to 0%. All of this means that apprentices are able to carry on their chosen trade with more confidence and skills, and have the skills to study at a higher level when they move on to the later phases held in Institutes of Technology.
GRETB FET Department produced their Literacy & Numeracy Strategy in 2015 and this was in keeping with the aims and objectives of the National Literacy & Numeracy Strategy. The Director of Further Education and Training, Eithne Nic Dhonnchadha emphasised the importance of ensuring all programmes are learner focused and she paid particular compliments to Alison Jones, Adult Literacy Organiser who coordinated and designed the specifics of the curriculum with instructors and tutors from the Galway and Roscommon Education and Training Centre in Mervue. All the teaching material was created to support instruction in the motor technology, metal fabrication, carpentry and joinery and electrical apprenticeship programmes. Additional support material was created to support the new Commis Chef Apprenticeship.

GRETB is delighted that this ground breaking work has been recognised in this way, and look forward to developing the programme further.
