Screen Skills Ireland and GRETB Launch the Media Production Assistant Traineeship

Screen Skills Ireland are excited to announce the launch of the Media Production Assistant Traineeship, delivered in partnership with the Galway and Roscommon Education and Training Board. Starting September 2019, based in the Gaeltacht this traineeship is for new entrants with a real passion for film and TV, who hope to build a career in the screen sector.

Speaking about this traineeship Eithne Nic Dhonnchadha, Director of Further Education and Training GRETB said,‘Ensuring  our programmes are linked to industry is key to us  here in GRETB and we are delighted to offer this Traineeship in partnership with Screenskills Ireland in supporting  the growth of the  TV and Film sector.’ 

The traineeship aims to produce the kind of technically and creatively multi-skilled individual that is required in a rapidly developing industry. This programme has been developed by industry for industry, and participants on the programme will be trained and supported within Film and TV companies and in the class room. The five core competencies covered by the programme will be, technical skills, creative skills, project management, research, marketing, communications and floor, set skills. 

Trainees will have the opportunity to assist with a wide range of technical support and operational areas, such as camera, lighting, sound and editing. The skills gained on this programme will enable participants to go on to work in many areas in film and TV at junior level. 

Applicants should have, a leaving certificate or equivalent, a good verbal and written command of the English/Irish language (please note classes in Irish will be provided), a passion for working in film and TV, ability to work collaboratively in a team environment, ability to work on their own initiative, computer skills and a strong work ethic and motivation.

Speaking about the traineeship, Gareth Lee, Manager of Screen Skills Ireland, said, “This industry-focused traineeship will enable participants to gain the essential skills and practical knowledge they need to thrive as new entrants in the screen sector. Traineeships like this one are essential for developing new talent, which will enable the sector to continue to grow over the coming years.”
