Coláiste na Coiribe

Ar an Aoine, an 22ú Meán Fómhair 2017, osclófar foirgneamh nua Choláiste na Coiribe, an t-aon scoil dara leibhéal lán-Ghaeilge i gcathair na Gaillimhe, ar Bhóthar Bhaile na mBúrcach, Cnoc na Cathrach.

Bunaíodh Coláiste na Coiribe i 1992 mar gur thuig údaráis Choiste Gairmoideachais Chathair na Gaillimhe, maraon le tuismitheoirí na cathrach, go raibh géarghá agus éileamh ar a leithéid de scoil dara leibhéal lán-Ghaeilge. Taobh istigh de 10 mbliana, bhí níos mó ná 130 scoláire inti agus an fás ag leanúint.  Le cúig bliana fichead anuas, tháinig fás agus forbairt ar an scoil le méadú suntasach ó thaobh líon na scoláirí chuile bhliain.  Tar éis cúpla bliain a chaitheamh ar an gCladach, bhog an scoil go Bóthar Thuama, ach ba ghearr go raibh an foirgneamh ansin ró-bheag don scoil agus bhí orainn scaipeadh amach go foirgneamh eile – ar feadh tréimhse fhada bhí an scoil roinnte suas ina trí cuid i dtrí fhoirgneamh difriúil.  Bhí an t-am tagtha le dul ag tóraíocht foirgneamh nua amháin a bheadh in ann déileáil leis an bhfás agus leis an bhforbairt uilig.  Le cúnamh ón gCoiste Gairmoideachais agus, ina dhiaidh sin, ó Bhord Oideachais agus Oiliúna na Gaillimhe agus Ros Comáin, cuireadh feachtas ar bun le foirgneamh nua a chur ar fáil.  Tar éis roinnt mhaith tóraíochta, socraíodh an suíomh ag Cnoc na Cathrach a fháil agus, le cead agus le maoiniú ón Roinn Oideachais agus Scileanna, tosaíodh ar an tógáil.  Deartha ag Coady Partnerships Architects, ba iad Stewart an Príomh-chonraitheoir le cuidiu ó Shuirbhéir Cainníochta, Henley Kavanagh McGowan, Innealtóirí Struchtúr agus Sibhialta, Harewood Malone O’Regan agus Innealtóirí Seirbhísí, Malachy Walsh & Partners.  I Mí Dheireadh Fómhair 2015, bhog Coláiste na Coiribe ó Bhóthar Thuama go dtí an suíomh nua.

Tá an foirgneamh nua déanta do 720 scoláire agus is gearr go mbeimid ag an bhfigiúr sin. Tá chuile áis sa scoil nua, gach rud suas chun dáta leis an teicneolaíocht is deireanaí agus cuideoidh sé seo go mór le teagasc agus foghlaim sa scoil.  Cuireann Coláiste na Coiribe réimse leathan ábhar ar fáil sa Teastas Sóisearach (agus ar ndóigh sa tSraith Shóisearach nua) agus san Ardteistiméireacht agus déanann gach scoláire an Idirbhliain.  Cé go bhfuil clú agus cáil ar an scoil maidir le torthaí acadúla, tá béim mhór ar chúrsaí eischuraclam chomh maith.  Tá áiseanna den scoth againn san fhoirgneamh nua, le halla spóirt mór, cúirteanna cispheile agus páirc imeartha.  Chomh maith leis an spórt, cuirimid béim mhór ar na healaíona chomh maith, go mórmhór sa cheol agus sa damhsa agus i gcúrsaí ealaíne féin.

Tá ceathrú céid caite againn ag cur oideachas den chéad scoth ar fáil, agus táimid ag súil go mór leis an leathchéad a bhaint amach.

On Friday 22nd September 2017, the new school building at Colásite na Coiribe, Galway City’s only second level all-Irish school, will be officially opened at Ballyburke Road, Knocknacarra.

Coláiste na Coiribe was founded in 1992 following the realisation by City of Galway VEC and by parents in the city that there was a demand for a second level Irish-medium school. Within 10 years, the number of students had risen to over 130 and the growth continued every year for the past 25 years.  Having spent its first few years based at the Claddagh, the school moved to a building on the Tuam Road, but it wasn’t long before that building was too small and the school had to spread out to other buildings – for a considerable while the school was divided into 3 parts in 3 different buildings.  The time had come to look for a new building that could cater for the continuing growth and development.  Spearheaded by City of Galway VEC and later by GRETB, a campaign began to secure a new building.  After some searching, a site was secured at Knocknacarra and, following permission and funding from the Department of Education and Skills, the building began.  Designed by Coady Partnership Architects, the main contractor for the project was Stewart, with Quantity Surveyors, Henley Kavanagh McGowan, Structural and Civil Engineers, Harewood Malone O’Regan and Services Engineers, Malachy Walsh & Partners.  In October 2015, Coláiste na Coiribe moved from the Tuam Road to its new building at Knocknacarra.

The new building can accommodate 720 students and we will shortly reach that figure. The new school is very well equipped and teaching and learning will be greatly enhanced by the most up-to-date facilities. Coláiste na Coiribe provides a wide range of subjects at both Junior Certificate (including the new Junior Cycle) and at Leaving Certificate levels and all of our students participate in Transition Year.  While the school has a great reputation for its academic achievements, there is also a huge emphasis on extra-curricular activities.  Our facilities are outstanding, with a full-size PE Hall, basketball courts and a playing field.  The Arts are also important to us through music and dance, as well as art itself.

With a quarter century spent providing education of the highest quality through the medium of Irish, we very much look forward to reaching the half century.
