VTOS Castlerea

The V.T.O.S. programme in Castlerea is part of the wider range of courses offered by Galway Roscommon Education & Training Board (GRETB) The Centre is situated in the former vocational school building on  Patrick St, Castlerea.

Adult Education has always been a priority in Castlerea with (GRETB) and formally (VEC) offering a wide range of courses from QQI at Levels 1-5.  All of these are offered within the building, varying from part time day/evening (Accredited and non-accredited) to  QQI Level 5 full time courses.

As a stand-alone centre our students can learn in an independent adult environment.    We constantly strive to improve our courses and the facilities in which we deliver them. VTOS creates opportunities for adults to return to education, make friends, open doors and to improve their confidence and skills. It allows individuals to look into different career directions and offers students the chance to progress to third level education or explore career paths of their choice.

The teachers who work in VTOS Castlerea are all dedicated to the work of adult education.   They are committed to teaching their subjects in which they all are fully competent and qualified.
From a teaching perspective, it is enjoyable to work with adults and to play a part in helping them to reach their full potential, especially when those individuals may not have had a chance previously to make the educational choices which are now available to them.

To be eligible for VTOS you need to be over 21 years of age and signing on for a DSP payment for minimum of six months.  For more information select link to our brochure.

Art & Design

Our Art/Design course takes on the philosophy of learning by doing.  We offer the full QQI Level 5 major award in Art & Design, allowing students to collate a portfolio, which is competent in areas such as drawing, paint, ceramic & printmaking amongst others.  Besides exhibiting work locally and taking on work experience in collaboration with other educational institutes and local business/industry, we have also taken part in an episode of Irish TV, launched the Aontas Adult Learners Festival,  produced work for the mental health services in  Roscommon Hospital on a project that promotes positive mental health.  We have also featured in the Sunday Business Post, promoting Adult Education.   Most recently, in collaboration with Castlerea Men’s Shed we exhibited a Postcard garden in the BLOOM festival in the Phoenix Park, this was an amazing experience for the students that participated.  A number of students have progress to further education, third level and some have secured work through their work placements.

Tourism with Business

Tourism is one of Ireland’s most important economic sectors and is one of our largest indigenous industries, supporting an estimated 260,000 jobs in communities all around the country.  GRETB recognise the importance of this sector and the impact it has, in both rural and urban Ireland.

Castlerea VTOS were the first educational scheme to promote the QQI L5 award for Tourism & Business in the county.  The course has now been offered for three years and we have a number of modules that are of particular interest to those pursuing a career in tourism including Reception & Frontline Office Skills, Tourism Information & Administration as well as Tourism Principles and Practice. From an employment perspective, Roscommon has much to offer in this sector with a large number of parks and large houses of notoriety, the National Famine Museum at Strokestown, Clonalis House here in Castlerea and  King House in Boyle .  Other interesting fields are working in hotels, visitor centres, tour guiding and information centres. All are appealing when identifying with the Work Experience module.  A number of our students have been successful with job offers after their placement.

Business Administration

Business administration is administration of  business. It includes all aspects of overseeing and supervising business operations, as well as related fields which include accounting, finance, project management and marketing

Castlerea VTOS offer modules that we feel we will be appropriate and relevant to students who would like to pursue Business Administration as a career in the locality and for others who wish to pursue it at a higher level, it also acts as a channel.  We offer a number of modules which include Spreadsheets, Database, the Internet and Desktop Publishing,  Business Administration Skills, Book Keeping, Manual & Computerised modules are also offered, Payroll may be offered through this centre in 2020.
